Did you know that spaying and neutering can result in
physical and behavioral benefits
for your pet? This is one of the reasons that we recommend these procedures for all dogs and cats.
Here at Hudson Animal Hospital, we want all of your canine and feline friends to be healthy, just as much as you do. Opting to have your pet spayed or neutered is one of the many ways to achieve this goal. Although some pet owners feel uneasy when they hear the word “surgery,” these procedures are actually very common and highly beneficial, with minimal side effects.
For the best results, it’s generally recommended that a pet be spayed or neutered around 6 to 9 months of age, so it’s a popular topic of discussion for puppies and kittens. However, there isn’t a specific age limit to spay or neuter a pet. There just may be some additional pre-anesthetic services required to ensure your pet is healthy enough for surgery. We’ll be happy to discuss the ins and outs of spaying and neutering for your pet at your next visit here in Hudson, NC.

For male pets, neutering …
- Reduces or eliminates aggressive, destructive, and territorial behavior, including marking and mounting (humping).
- Lowers or eliminates risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease in male pets.
- May help decrease pet homelessness and limit overpopulation.
About the Spay/Neuter Procedure
Spaying involves surgically removing the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes while neutering involves removing the testicles. These procedures sterilize a pet, so they will no longer be able to reproduce. The spay procedure typically takes roughly 45 minutes to complete, since it involves the removal of more reproductive organs. The neuter procedure, on the other hand, can be completed in just a few minutes or up to 20 minutes.
We typically ask that you drop your pet off for surgery in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. We’ll give you the exact drop-off and pick-up time when you make your appointment. Because we prioritize the safety and comfort of every patient, we monitor their vitals before, during, and after surgery, so you can be confident that your pet will be well-cared for at our animal hospital.
